For twenty years the internet has run on one word: social. Social networks, social graphs, social media, social proof. They connected billions of people. They also left most of the value, the data and the decisions with a handful of platforms.
On Saturday 24 October 2026, Society OS backs a different word. The Australian company opens Place & Space, the Society OS Community: a place where local businesses, organisations, residents and AI agents can find each other, work together and build trust that cannot be bought. The opening falls on World Development Information Day and Make A Difference Day, and the Gold Coast is the first City.
"We have shifted from Social OS to Society OS, from Social Graph to Society Graph. Social is about how people connect. Society is about how people organise: the places, the rules, the trust and the shared value that let a community act together." Darryl S Astin, Founder, Society OS
This article explains what changes, why the timing matters, and what anyone can do from launch day.
Why now: AI is the new front door
More and more people ask an AI assistant to find a tradie, a café, a physio or a youth group, instead of scrolling a page of links. That shift quietly changes who gets found.
An AI agent can only recommend what it can read, understand and check. A business with twenty years of honest service but a thin online footprint is effectively invisible to it. A business with a slick website and nothing behind it can look better than it is.
"The question used to be: can people find you? Now it's: can an AI agent find you, understand you and trust what it reads? Most good local businesses can't answer yes to that yet. We built Place & Space so they can." Darryl S Astin
The social web was designed for people scrolling. The next web will be read just as often by agents acting on someone's behalf. Communities need a layer that both can rely on.
What social got right, and what it left out
Society OS's white paper, From Social To Society (20 October 2026), gives the social web credit for proving that connection at scale is possible. It also names what the attention model left behind:
- Your network belongs to the platform. You can't take it with you, or see how it's used.
- Visibility is for sale. Reach goes to whoever pays or provokes most, not to whoever is most useful nearby.
- Trust is a number with no source. A star rating rarely tells you who checked what, or when.
- Local life comes second. Feeds are global by default.
- AI agents were never planned for. Social platforms were built for people scrolling, not for agents asking questions and acting for someone.
Three shifts at the heart of the launch
1. Society OS, not Social OS
Social is about how people connect. Society is about how people organise.
On a social platform, the platform decides. In Society OS, the rules are published and the community steers.
Coordination runs bottom-up, from Circle to City to Country. A Circle is a small, stewarded local group tied to a real place. Each place has exactly one Circle, and once a Circle is started it cannot be duplicated, so local energy comes together instead of splitting into rival groups.
2. Society Graph, not Social Graph
A social graph maps who is connected to whom, mostly to predict what you'll click. The Society Graph maps something more useful: people, businesses, places, Circles, evidence and AI agents, and the accountable links between them. This business serves this suburb. This endorsement came from that named business. This steward approved this decision, for this reason.
Every fact carries a label that says where it came from: Owner-Declared, Public Record or Checked. Public pages are fully readable by AI agents and search engines. Who asked a question, private workspaces and personal notes stay private.
3. Society Capital, not just social capital
Sociologists have long shown that trust and relationships are valuable. Robert D. Putnam's Bowling Alone made "social capital" a household phrase in 2000. The trouble is that it is invisible. A newcomer, or an AI agent, can't see the twenty years of goodwill a local plumber has built.
Society Capital is the term Society OS uses for social capital made visible, portable and governed:
- Visible. It shows on a business's Presence as endorsements from named businesses, Circle membership, years of service and checked facts.
- Portable. It belongs to the business and its community, and any agent can read it through open pages.
- Governed. It is earned, never bought. Trust words such as Verified and Checked are reserved and are not included in any paid plan. Search results are ranked by relevance, never by payment.
Society Capital is a way of showing trust. It is not a financial product, a fund or an investment.
Four more shifts
| The social era | The society era | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Social Network | Society Network | From followers to Circles, Cities and Countries |
| Social Proof | Society Proof | From likes and stars to labelled, earned evidence |
| Social Media | Society Media | From an attention feed to owner-approved knowledge people and agents can rely on |
| Social Currency | Society Currency | From status points to mutual credit that keeps value local |
Your Presence is already here
Place & Space starts with a head start. Public Presences have already been prepared for many Australian businesses from publicly available information. Each one shows what is known and labels where each fact came from. Each Presence stays unclaimed until its owner activates it.
The question used to be: can people find you? Now it is: can an AI agent find you, understand you and trust what it reads?
In the weeks after launch, Society OS will write to businesses that already have a Presence, inviting them to check their details, correct anything that is wrong and activate their Presence for free. Every email will clearly say who it is from and include a one-click opt-out. Society OS never sells or shares contact details.
"If information about your business is already out there, you should be the one who gets to fix it. We'd rather tell you it's there than leave an AI to guess." Darryl S Astin
Activation is free. Once activated, the owner controls what the Presence says, and nothing is published in their name without their approval.
What anyone can do from launch day
- Activate a free Presence. A living public profile that people and AI agents can read and trust.
- Run a free AI check. See how visible and trustworthy your business looks to AI assistants, with clear next steps.
- Strengthen your Presence. A Presence Strength score shows what to add next. Free add-ons include services, a portfolio, events and offers, extra locations, booking and call buttons, and automatic translation.
- Join or start your local Circle. Every Circle gets a free private workspace for notes, agendas, decisions and tasks, plus live video rooms.
- Meet on The Floor. Drop into video rooms, see who's available and knock to say hello. A business can bring its AI twin, which answers questions only from public facts and never agrees deals.
- Ask The Directory. Ask in plain English, such as "electricians near Burleigh Heads". Every answer explains its reasons and shows where each one came from.
- Create, approve and share. The MUSE (create), CARE (approve) and RISE (publish and share) flow turns ideas into content, campaign pages and even a hosted website.
The promises
Place & Space runs on a short list of promises that apply to everyone, including paying members:
- Earned, not bought. Trust words and ranking are never for sale.
- No lead fees. Businesses never pay for enquiries.
- Your enquiry is yours. It goes only to the business you chose, and is never sold or passed to competitors.
- No unsolicited pitches between members. Guests can't message or knock on members. Members can only knock on people who are online and available.
- Owner approval. Nothing speaks for a business, AI twins included, without the owner's say-so.
- One of each. One Presence per business, and one Circle per place.
Places and Spaces
The name sums up the model.
"Places help people find you. Spaces help you get things done together."
Places are the directory, the map and the Circles, where you find and are found. Spaces are the workspaces, rooms and The Floor, where work gets done. They follow one arc from personal to shared: Self (your own notes and tasks), Sphere (your business and close collaborators) and Society (the Circles you belong to).
The Gold Coast leads
The Gold Coast is the first City in the Community, with Forming Circles across South East Queensland. Society OS will build density one local corridor at a time, starting with small groups of businesses that know and serve each other, before going city-wide.
Places help people find you. Spaces help you get things done together.
Anyone, anywhere, can start the Circle for their place. If a Circle already exists, they are shown how to join it instead.
What Place & Space is not
Clear limits build trust as much as features do:
- Not an attention feed. There is no engagement-ranked timeline to game.
- Not pay-to-rank. Paid plans add tools, never trust words or search position.
- Not a lead-selling marketplace. Enquiries are never resold.
- Not a financial product. Neither Society Capital nor the planned $T credit is an investment.
Coming next: trade that stays local
Later, Society OS plans to introduce $T (Trade), a non-cashable mutual credit for businesses. A business will be able to earn $T by selling spare capacity and spend it with other members, so value keeps circulating in the community. $T will roll out in stages with published rules and balance limits. It is not an investment or a financial product.
Make a difference, locally
To mark Make A Difference Day, Place & Space publishes six free local actions anyone can take, from endorsing a business you trust to inviting a neighbouring business to activate its Presence. Society OS is not affiliated with or endorsed by the organisers of World Development Information Day or Make A Difference Day.
"The social era proved we can connect at scale. The society era asks what that connection is for. We think the answer starts on your own street, one Circle at a time." Darryl S Astin
